Thungela Talent Management Platform

WinWin International & Thungela, 2021

My company was approached by WinWin International to join their team in a project for one of their clients. The company, Thungela, was originally part of AngloAmerican but has now become a sole entity. The client requested a customised Talent Management Platform that will enable the Talent Manager to perform their tasks with ease. These tasks includes: Talent Reviews, Succession Planning and Employee Development.

Please Note: Due to the nature of this project, some information may not be displayed. All information/data displayed is fictional.

Project Brief

WinWin International is seeking a development partner that can help them develop the Talent Management Platform that will enable talent managers to manage the report on the companies talent status and provide managers insight into specific areas of strengths and weaknesses within their training program.

The Team & My Role

The team consisted out of three developers, a scrum master and a designer (me). I had the help of a senior designer for the first sprint (2 weeks) of the project.

I was responsible for designing the new system based of the current system that the client was using. The senior designer helped me to conduct client meetings and gain more information regarding UX requirements.

How the problem was approached

1. Client Meetings

We held client meetings where the client would take us through the current system and explain the functionality and the Talent management processes. As a designer, I wanted to fully understand what the Talent manager does or need to do on the system. During these sessions the team focused on:

  • Identifying the pain points

  • Understanding what the current system does

  • Gathering the requirements of the new system

  • Gaining more knowledge about Talent Management and Succession Planning

2. Researching other TM platforms

I decided to research other TM platforms to gain more knowledge on what type of functionality is useful, or what may be lacking in the current system. This also helped me get a clear view of what a TM platform should do and how it is used. I spent time watching demo's of the systems and reading reviews of the platforms. I focused on these 3 popular platforms:

  1. SAP SuccessFactors

  2. WorkDay

  3. ADP Workforce Now

3. Brainstorming

The development team and I had some brainstorming sessions around some of the functionality. This helped a lot seeing that at this point I was the only designer on the team. We had sessions where we would focus on one feature and think of different solutions or ways to go about it.

4. Ideation (A lot of ideation)

I did a lot of ideation on this project. Iterating on features for hours, trying to come up with a new and better solution every time. Certain sections of the system didn't allow for much creativity, but other sections I had the freedom to come up with some out of the ordinary ideas. And of course, still keeping things useable and UX/UI best practice. The client wanted something fun to use, not only for Talent Managers but for the employees as well.

High Fidelity Wireframes

The wireframes were used to flesh out the functionality and to see what functionality doesn't work. The UI designs therefore differ quite a lot from the wireframes. Here are four of the wireframes:

The Career History

The career history is just a section where employees can showcase their past experience and roles.

The Career Profile

The career profile is seen by the Employee, the Talent Manager, Manager and Manager Once Removed. Some sections are hidden from the employee such as the Talent ID.

This is almost like a CV for the employee. It contains a professional statement, education, languages etc.

Talent Identification

This is where the Talent Manager adds the information which was discussed during the Talent Review.

Succession Planning

This screen is part of the succession planning flow. This is where the talent manager will do the succession planning for a role and the role can also be updated if needed.

Rolling off of the project & What I learned

I unfortunately had to roll off the project since I was put on another project. I completed most of the UI screens and the screens displayed were done by me. However the final version may differ from the version that I last was a part of.

I am proud of the work I did for this project and how well I coped, even during the uncertain times. The project was put on hold due and it was uncertain if the project would continue. I did my best to provide the client with the best solution. I learned a lot about working with a bigger client such as Thungela and also working with a middel-man, WinWin. I also learned to handle client meetings on my own and how to handle a meeting that doesn't go to plan.
