Capitec Bank Point-of-Sale MVP
Capitec Bank, 2021-January 2022
The Point of sale device enables small business owners and merchants to sell their products in a simple, affordable and effective way. The application is available on Capitec POS devices and in a mobile app version.
About the Project
South African small business owners and merchants are a vital part of the country’s economy. A challenge faced by these small businesses is the drive and increase of card payments versus cash payments. Most merchants within South Africa do not have access to POS (point-of-sale) devices or those that do are expected to pay high transaction fees. Capitec Bank tasked Retro Rabbit’s UX/UI designer to research the current market of POS devices and merchants, design the product and complete user testing of the product.
The Process
The team consisted of a Product Owner, UX/UI Designer, Business Analyst, Tech Lead, two Developers and a Tester. I was the UX/UI designer for this project and I was responsible for doing user research, user interviews, designing the wireframes and prototyping the full journey end to end.
Research
1. User Interviews & Merchant Observations
I completed research by doing user interviews and observing merchants as their place of business. During my research I compiled a few interesting details:
-
Most merchants used a calculator to calculate the sum total of the purchases
-
Smaller merchants uses amount sale, merchants with large amounts of stock used product sale
-
Certain merchants had more time to complete a transaction
-
Users wants a POS that integrates with other systems
2. User Flows
After the requirements from both the users and the stakeholders were gathered, the next step was to complete the user flows. Half way through, a Business Analyst joined the team and we could complete this task together.
3. Competitive Analysis
The product owner and I did a full competitive analysis to analyse features of potential competitors.
Analysed the following aspects:
-
Pricing and Cost
-
What hardware available
-
Is there a mobile app available and how does it integrate with the hardware
-
What is the main use of the product
-
Does it allow for stock and inventory management
-
What type of merchant uses the product ( E.g. small businesses, informal merchants, formal merchants)
Design
I followed a very iterative design process where I designed, prototyped, tested and redesigned. We removed some features from the scope but added other features that we realised were important to our merchants and target users.
